Failed ad campaigns #1

by Markham on 3 May 2010

Every so often, I’ll charge into my boss’ office, flush with excitement, and I’ll tell him I’ve got a great idea for a new ad campaign.  Jon (my boss) will lean back in his chair and patiently listen to my great new idea.

For the following great idea, I didn’t even bother to pitch it as an actual campaign but I did have Jon take a look.  I expected his evaluation would be along the lines of “I would buy it, but I am reluctant to sell this campaign to the AARP.”  Instead, he scowled so hard that his face turned inside out.  “I don’t like it,” he said.

The explanation:

Working in a life insurance company, we become rather accustomed to death and the macabre, so it’s hard for us to imagine what our ads look like to people who don’t talk about death all day.

I don’t mean to convey the culture at Wholesale Insurance as anything approaching unwholesome.  We’re really just what you’d expect: crumbling stone building, dessicated bones littering the front walk, manacles bolted to the ceilings and floors, and the tortured screams of filers of fraudulent claims, just emanating through the stone floor above the dungeon.

Most of what we do at Wholesale Insurance:

When we’re not pulling teeth and fingernails out of hapless larcenists, we’re trying to bring users (and even competitors) to our website.  Its main function is to provide term life insurance quotes, but it also is (in my opinion) one of the top three sites for information on life insurance and life insurance products, specifically, I dare to say that it’s the best of the top three sites.  Yes, there’s still plenty of work to do on it, but it has greater depth and breadth of information on life insurance and using life insurance wisely than I think you’ll find anywhere.

Neat ad. But then I guess I’m jaded too. My relatives are all military, law enforcement, or medical industry. We’re a bit macabre as well. :-)
Thanks.

I’ve spent a few hours educating myself about life insurance on Wholesale Insurance’s website; I found it informative and helpful in making my decisions. Your me, your blog today was in such poor taste; it minimizes some of your other posts that were great. What were you thinking?

I thought the ad was great. But you do have to wonder if the public (and possibly journalistic) outcry would tarnish your image rather than bring in revenue.

Humans by nature are evoked by curiosity…and although this picture would make anyone stop and think “what the?”…which would be exactly what you are trying to do…it would then make them think… why would someone post this? So it would have a backfire effect! Sad, but true.

It’s fun to be creative, and it’s really good to have a boss who speaks his mind. keep on blogging.
